Martins Island
The mild subtropical climate of Northern Florida supports an abundance of temperate salt marsh vegetation, a lush carpet of seemingly endless marsh grass. Containing a rich ‘nutrient soup’ these marshes protect millions of ribbed mussels, fiddler crabs, and the periwinkle snails, the dominant marsh animals. Low tide brings a host of other predacious animals into the marsh to feed as herons, egrets, ibis, raccoons, and others spread over the exposed marsh floor and the muddy banks of the tidal creeks in search of food.
To follow the winding creeks through the marshes, surrounded by gently waving fields of spartina grass, gives the kayaker a real sense of solitude. The watery pathways meander through the quiet, almost mysterious landscape inhabited by a wide variety of native birds, animals, and plants. The marshes, some of the most productive ecosystems in the world, do not overpower the observer with awe, but rather reveals its charm in small, subtle ways.
Along the coast, small islands rise out of the cordgrass prairies. These back-barrier islands are completely or partially encircled by estuarine salt marsh. Along the eastern seaboard, few places retain such a vast and wild character. Hammocks serve as roosting grounds for birds as they rest while feeding in the marsh. They also serve as nesting grounds for colonies of Ibises, Herons, Wood Storks and other colonial nesters.
This trip is designed for advanced beginner through intermediate paddlers. It is a great introduction to sea kayaking for those with some kayak experience. This trip has more wind exposure and covers more distance than beginner level trips.
